South of Africa there is a cold mass ice and snow and only the strongest of people can last for a long time in such a cold place. Except for the polar bears who have a coat of fur on their back to keep themselves warm. The polar bears are used to and comfortable with the coldness of the Antarctic area. Polar bears live in the Arctic and hunt seals and other marine mammals from sea. They also travel, mate and sometimes give birth on the ice. But sea ice is melting due to global warming and might be melting for decades. Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne noted that the decline of Arctic sea ice is the greatest threat to the bears. “Because polar bears are vulnerable to this loss of habitat, they are in my judgment likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future.” Kempthorne said. Many scientists say that the human behavior is the one causing the ice in Antarctica to melt. The U.S. classifies the polar bear as a marine mammal which means that the bear’s new threatened status will not stop oil exploration within its habitat. Hunting of polar bears as a food source by certain native people and trade in native handicrafts made from polar bears will also continue. However importing polar bear products from Canada where trophy hunting is legal will be banned. Ecologist from the New York based Wildlife Conservation say that the polar bear population could go extinct by 2050 Scott Bergen is an ecologist at this corporation noted that it will take international cooperation to save these animals. “If you take a long-term view meaning a hundred-year view into the future” Bergen said “polar bears existence is not necessarily totally dependent on what happens in the United States. Global warming plays a big role in the Artic environments conditions. We should do whatever we can to save the earth like recycling, helping one another and taking shorter showers or planting a tree. If our earth is treated badly we face the consequences. If we recycle and use cars less we can reduce air pollution. We should do everything we can to preserve the earth and keep it clan for the many people who will follow us in the many years to come. Like everyone says everyone can all help and make a difference
