Current Event Topic 2: Plastic Waste

At the 238th meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS), scientist made a surprising discovery. Members of this organization discovered that plastic substances decompose in water! This may seem like a good thing, but when the plastic is exposed to rain, sunlight and natural environment conditions, it decomposes and toxic is spread throughout the sea! PH.D Katsuhiko Saido a researcher for the ACS says that plastic decomposing is "a rise to yet another source of global contamination that will continue into the future." Every year 150,000 tons of plastic waste get washed up onto the shores of Japan alone! "The North Pacific Subtropical Convergence Zone north of Hawaii is the location of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch." Saido said. When trash like plastic is thrown into the ocean it causes more trouble for animals than humans, that's when mother earth gets messy. Scientist say that plastic usually does not break down in an animals body. Though when the plastic is decomposing the toxic can be absorbed by the animal disturbing their hormones, health and seriously hurting the animals reproductive system. Styrene monomer (SM), styrene dimer (SD) and styrene trimer (ST) are compounds that form when plastic is left to decompose. Styrene trimer can threaten a marine animal's life.
These animals do not have the ability to help themselves, they are not familiar with our garbage. Humans, being more developed animals, can do anything and should be kind enough to help clean up our beaches, forests, parks and much more from the messes we made. Many people are on the right track and if everyone picthes in we could have the clean earth that everyone wants. This is on going and right now while you are reading this a helpless animal could be dying because someone forgot to throw out a soda bottle. Not only us (people), but the animals too could live in a safe environment. Everyone depends on one another the animals depend on us now more than ever, and everyone can contribute to saving marine animals all around the world.

Summer Reading Question

The question that I chose for summer reading was:
Book: The City of Beast

What charater did you identify with the most? Why?

I think I identify most with Nadia. In the story Nadia is a strong, powerful girl and when she sets her mind to something she can do it. She believes in herself and I think everyone should believe in themselves. I think I am like Nadia is because I like to try new things and I believe I can do anything if I try! If I can I will help someone if they need any help. Nadia is strong, unique, caring and helpful. She dosen't mind snakes or spiders she believes that she is strong and that someone is always wacthing her and guiding her. I think shes living her life to the fullest!

Bullying (Man's Inhumanity to Man)

I think that the reason we don't have a rule against bullying formed is because you can say alot of things but not necessarily follow them. I think that our township is thinking it might take up to much time or something like that. I think this relates to the Lord of the Flies in several ways one being the rule of how you have to hold the conch to speak. It is a rule but not followed well. You can get yelled at and get in trouble but the damage that one did is already done.
